Frontogenesis, Mixing, and Stratification in Estuarine Channels with Curvature

چکیده

Abstract Idealized numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the influence of channel curvature on estuarine stratification and mixing. Stratification is decreased tidal energy dissipation increased in sinuous estuaries compared straight estuaries. We applied a vertical salinity variance budget quantify straining mixing stratification. Secondary circulation due found affect channels through both lateral enhanced Alternating negative positive occur meanders upstream downstream bend apex, respectively, corresponding normal reversed secondary with curvature. The locally curved maximum located apex. Bend-scale bottom fronts are generated near inner bank apex as result interaction between flow Shear at fronts, instead overturning by circulation, provides dominant mechanism for destruction Channel can also lead drag, using Simpson number this drag coefficient relate decrease broader parameter space.

Frontogenesis and Frontal Progression of a Trapping-Generated Estuarine Convergence Front and Its Influence on Mixing and Stratification

Estuarine fronts are well known to influence transport of waterborne constituents such as phytoplankton and sediment, yet due to their ephemeral nature, capturing the physical driving mechanisms and their influence on stratification and mixing is difficult. We investigate a repetitive estuarine frontal feature in the Snohomish River Estuary that results from complex bathymetric shoal/ channel i...

Friction, Frontogenesis, and the Stratification of the Surface Mixed Layer

The generation and destruction of stratification in the surface mixed layer of the ocean is understood to result from vertical turbulent transport of buoyancy and momentum driven by air–sea fluxes and stresses. In this paper, it is shown that the magnitude and penetration of vertical fluxes are strongly modified by horizontal gradients in buoyancy and momentum. A classic example is the strong r...

Study of trace metals during estuarine mixing of Jarahi River water with the Musa Estuary water

Flocculation of metals is one of the most important estuarine processes that occur due to the mixing of seawater and river water and colloidal metals undergo this process come in the form of flocculants. Due to the important role of flocculation process in producing suitable food sources for aquatic organisms and reducing the amount of input pollution into aquatic environments, the present stud...

Estuarine Adjustment to Changes in River Flow and Tidal Mixing

The adjustment of estuarine circulation and density to changes in river flow and tidal mixing is investigated using analytical and numerical models. Tidally averaged momentum and salinity equations in a rectangular estuary are vertically averaged over two levels, resulting in equations that are analytically tractable while retaining a broad range of time-dependent behavior. It is found that bot...
